Mar. 25/16: Nelson (Wakapuaka Cemetery)

A cemetery may seem a strange subject for my last post from Nelson, but you can learn so much from them. Wakapuaka (another Maori name) is one of Nelson's historic cemeteries and is just minutes from my accommodation. As everything seems to be!

It is located on a hillside, about as fabulous a setting as you can imagine for a forever home. Some of the area's earliest settlers were buried here, and I wanted to include some pictures I took of the setting, and the gravestones, in this blog. So here we go:

A bit of information about the cemetery

Looking out to Tasman Bay from the
cemetery, on a rather overcast day

A sign you rarely see in Canadian cemeteries

And this is why the sign is needed!

Monument of George Moonlight,
who died in 1884 and devoted his life to
developing the gold mining industry

Thought  to be the 1st white baby girl born in
Nelson, in 1842. She lived to be 87!

This couple died before 1900 and were likely also
among the first settlers. What a view they have.
